Some 150 metres from Stradun, the limestone promenade at the centre of Dubrovnik's Old Town, Villa Revelin looks out over the city walls and the sea. This stone house was built in the 18th century and renovated in 2019, and its restoration pairs historic character with modern, considered design. It extends across 300 square metres of living space on a 500-square-metre plot and accommodates up to eight guests in four bedrooms with five bathrooms. The villa is fully air-conditioned and has a private pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and gym, so a stay in the heart of the city can still be a restful one.
Stradun is roughly a five-minute walk away, and from the villa it is easy to circle the city walls, spend an afternoon at the nearby Banje beach, explore the museums or wander the narrow lanes of a city founded in the 7th century. Dubrovnik has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Its great walls run for 2 kilometres and rise to 25 metres, punctuated by towers and fortresses built and rebuilt between the 12th and the late 17th century, with the Revelin Fortress guarding the east and Lovrijenac the west. Visitors still enter through the historic Ploče and Pile gates, and in summer costumed guards gather at Pile. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival, held since 1950, fills stages in front of St Blaise's Church, at Lovrijenac and Revelin, on the island of Lokrum and inside the Rector's Palace and the Sponza Palace atrium. The Dubrovnik International Film Festival takes place every year, and admirers of Game of Thrones will recognise the streets that served as King's Landing. Daily needs are close by. Restaurants lie about 80 metres away, a bank and ATM about 100 metres, a café and pharmacy about 200 metres, and the bus station and the nearest beach about 300 metres. Shops are some 500 metres away, the ferry about 1 kilometre, tennis courts 3 kilometres, the marina 9 kilometres and Dubrovnik Airport 22 kilometres.
The entrance opens onto a stone terrace set up for dining, where an old stone wall recalls the long history of the house and meals can be taken facing the walls of Dubrovnik. To the right is a Mediterranean garden with greenery and a lounge set, and within it sits the heated private pool of 28 square metres. It is furnished with sun loungers and sunshades, pool towels are provided, and a morning swim comes with a direct view of the city walls. At the far end of the terrace an annex holds a Jacuzzi for four, a sauna and a gym, a place to recover between excursions in Dubrovnik and the surrounding area. On top of the annex is a second, more intimate dining area, well suited to evening meals, with views of the sea and the nearby islet of Lokrum.
From the terrace you step into the ground floor and a spacious living room with a sofa, armchairs and satellite television. Art objects and antique amphorae set the tone. Beyond it lies a large, fully equipped kitchen with a wine bar. It has a stove, oven, range hood, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, microwave, ice maker and wine cooler, along with a juicer, blender, mixer, toaster and kettle. Utensils, cutlery and tea towels are provided. A separate area holds a dining table for eight and an indoor fireplace designed for barbecue cooking. Two of the four bedrooms are also on this level, each with its own en suite bathroom.
A staircase leads to the first floor and two more spacious bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom. Here, beneath the roof, exposed beams are worked into the modern interior. All four bedrooms have a king-size bed. Among the en suite bathrooms, one has both a shower and a bathtub, one has a bathtub and two have showers. A fifth bathroom completes the house.
Practical comforts include Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a washing machine and dryer, ironing equipment, a vacuum cleaner and hairdryers. A baby cot and a high chair are included, as are tourist tax, pool and garden maintenance, a villa manager, a 24/7 concierge service and a welcome package of water and fruit. Stays of four or five nights include one cleaning and one towel change, and stays of six or seven nights include two of each. Weddings and events are not permitted. For those drawn to history and a quieter kind of indulgence, Villa Revelin offers an unhurried base from which to discover why Dubrovnik is a city to visit at least once in a lifetime.
