We have 10 luxury villas in Africa - typically ranging from 3 to 8 bedrooms - all of them in South Africa, where mountain backdrops, Atlantic and Indian Ocean coastline and easy access to city dining sit within a short drive of one another.
Africa is a vast continent, and for a villa stay South Africa is where we focus. Table Mountain, the Cape Winelands, long beaches and some of the continent's best restaurants and wine estates are all within reach, and private game reserves can be added as a separate leg of a trip. The climate is a draw in itself. Summer, from December to February, typically brings highs of around 25°C-26°C with very little rain, while June to August tends to be cooler, with highs near 16°C-17°C and the wettest weather of the year. Spring and autumn are generally mild, which suits active travellers.
Our villas are mostly set in towns and cities, so restaurants, shops and the coast are close at hand, and many have mountain or ocean views. Outdoor dining is a standard feature, and gardens, barbecues and lounge areas are common, with balconies in most. Private pools are a frequent highlight, and a good number are heated, which makes a difference in the cooler months. Families are well catered for, as a notable share of the collection is suited to children, and several villas are close to the beach. Housekeeping is usually part of the stay, and complimentary tea and coffee is often provided.
Pricing reflects the size and setting of each villa. The median nightly rate is $2,832, or $601 once you divide it across bedrooms, which gives a useful guide when comparing a three-bedroom retreat with a larger family home. Five-night minimums are the most common, though seven or ten nights apply at some villas, particularly in busier periods such as the festive season. We would suggest booking early for December and January, when demand is highest.
