Villas in Europe
Europe's villas range from Tuscan hill farms and Greek islands to Spanish coves, Provençal countryside and Alpine chalets. Italy, Spain and France offer the widest choice, with private pools and long alfresco lunches as the common thread.
Why Choose Europe for a Luxury Villa Holiday?
Europe is best approached one country at a time, and our villas cluster in six of them. Italy offers the farmhouses of Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. Spain covers the coves of Mallorca and Ibiza, and the Marbella coast of Andalusia. In France the choice is between Provence, the Côte d'Azur and the Alps. Greece means islands such as Mykonos, Paros and Crete; Portugal the Algarve and Comporta; and Croatia the Dalmatian coast around Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik. Iceland and Switzerland add smaller, more specialised collections.
A villa is what makes this continent work for a group. Summers on the Mediterranean are typically warm and dry, so days revolve around the pool, a terrace table and, in many places, a short walk to the sea. Daily housekeeping is common, and private chefs, boat charters and spa treatments are easy to arrange. We would argue that the best of Europe happens away from resorts: lunch from a Provençal market eaten at home, a tasting in Chianti, a boat out of a Dalmatian marina. Regional airports are usually a short drive from the villa, and several en-suite bedrooms keep multi-generational parties comfortable, one of the clearest reasons why hotels don't compare. In winter the Alps take over, with ski chalets in Courchevel, Méribel, Megève and Zermatt.
Best Time to Visit Europe
Temperature units
Late May to June and September are the strongest months for a Mediterranean villa holiday: the sea has warmed, the heat is gentler than midsummer and the beaches are quieter. July and August are the warmest and driest months, but also the busiest and the most expensive, so book those weeks well ahead. Conditions differ sharply between the Mediterranean, the Atlantic coast, the mountains and the far north, and the figures here reflect the main villa regions of southern Europe. Winter has its own pull, with skiing in the Alps and northern lights in Iceland.
Historical averages for this area over the past 10 years: typical high and low temperatures, total monthly rainfall and peak wind speed. Conditions vary from year to year.
Spring (March-May)
Spring is mild rather than hot, with average highs rising from around 15°C in March to 19°C in May as rainfall eases. Hillsides in Tuscany, Andalusia and Provence turn green and wildflowers appear, while almond and olive groves blossom across Greece and Portugal. Lighter crowds make Rome, Seville, Lisbon and the Amalfi Coast easier to enjoy, and walking, cycling and golf on the Algarve and Costa del Sol suit the season. The sea is still cool, so a heated pool is worth having.
Summer (June-August)
Summer is peak season, with average highs of 23°C to 26°C and rainfall at its lowest. The sea is warm enough for swimming around the Balearics, the Greek islands, Puglia and the Dalmatian coast, and boat days and beach clubs are in full swing. Evenings stay warm enough for late dinners on a terrace. Festival programmes include Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Verbier, with music events on Ibiza and the Greek islands, while Iceland has near-constant daylight. Families favour these weeks for school holidays, and prices tend to peak from July into August.
Autumn (September-November)
September is often the most comfortable month on the coast, with highs around 24°C and a sea still warmed by summer; by November highs ease to about 18°C and rain is typically at its heaviest. Grape harvests begin in Tuscany, Piedmont, the Douro Valley, Rioja and Provence, and truffle and olive oil seasons follow in Italy, Croatia's Istria and Greece, which makes the wine regions a natural base. Walking and cycling are at their best in September and October. Crowds fall noticeably, and Mallorca and Crete remain good choices into October. Northern Iceland starts to offer aurora viewing from late September.
Winter (December-February)
Winter along the southern coasts is mild, with average highs of 14°C to 16°C, though it can be wetter and windier. It suits wellness breaks, golf in southern Spain and Portugal, and city breaks in Rome, Paris, Lisbon and Barcelona. The main draw is skiing in the French Alps and Switzerland, where catered chalets in Courchevel, Méribel and Verbier are popular from late December to March. Iceland adds geothermal bathing to its northern lights. Prices are often lower outside the Christmas and February half-term weeks.

Concierge Travel Guide to Europe
Europe is planned one country at a time, with a single base for a week or two and day trips from there. Major hubs including London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Madrid, Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Lisbon and Istanbul connect well to North America, the Middle East and South America. Most villa areas have a regional airport close by, among them Nice, Palma, Málaga, Faro, Split, Pisa, Bari and Athens, and a hire car is usually the easiest way to reach the villa, though private transfers can be arranged.
Where to Eat and Drink
Italy, Spain and France hold some of the continent's most celebrated tables. Michelin-starred restaurants are found in Tuscany, Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast, the Basque Country, Barcelona, Provence and the Côte d'Azur. Cooking is strongly regional: handmade pasta in Emilia-Romagna, seafood and rice dishes along the Spanish coast, grilled fish and olive oil in Greece, and custard tarts and salt cod in Portugal. Wine is a reason to travel in itself, from Chianti and Piedmont to Rioja, Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Douro Valley and Croatia's Pelješac peninsula; our villas in wine regions put you close to the vineyards. Villa teams can arrange private chefs, cookery classes and vineyard tastings.
Beaches
The Costa del Sol, the Balearic Islands, the Algarve, the French Riviera, Sardinia, Puglia and the Greek islands, including Mykonos, Corfu and Crete, anchor beach holidays. Well-known stretches include Playa de Muro in Mallorca, Navagio Beach on Zakynthos and Zlatni Rat on the Croatian island of Brac. Smaller coves are easier to reach by boat along the Algarve, the Dalmatian coast and the Ionian islands. For direct access to the water, look at beachfront villas. Beach clubs are most established in Marbella, Ibiza, Saint-Tropez and Mykonos, and generally operate from May to October.
Golf
Southern Spain is the strongest base, with Valderrama and the courses around Marbella a draw, followed by the Algarve around Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago. Italy has good options near Lake Como and Rome, and France offers courses in the south-west and on the Riviera. Resort stays often include spa facilities, and villa teams can arrange tee times and lessons.
With Children
Most of our villas suit family stays. Waterparks operate along the Spanish and Greek coasts in summer, and the big parks include Gardaland on Lake Garda and Disneyland Paris. Wildlife ranges from Doñana National Park in Spain to whale-watching in Iceland. Boat trips are a highlight of Croatia's Dalmatian islands, Greece's Ionian Sea and the Italian lakes, and the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees give families walking and cycling in summer.
Culture and History
Historic towns include Florence, Siena, Seville, Granada, Dubrovnik, Split, Athens and Lisbon, and the major museums include the Louvre, the Uffizi, the Prado and the Acropolis Museum. Architecture runs from Roman ruins and Gothic cathedrals to Gaudí's Barcelona. Provence and Italian towns hold weekly markets, and the calendar includes the Venice Biennale and the Cannes Film Festival.

Collections are the quickest way to narrow a whole continent. Families tend to start with villas within walking distance of the beach, couples with breathtaking views, and larger parties with wedding villas built for shared dining and events, or properties with a gym or tennis court. Golfers can filter for golf villas, and winter parties for ski chalets. Timing matters as much as place, so read Best Time to Visit before fixing dates.
