Villas in Tamarind Hills
A gated hillside resort above Ffryes Beach on Antigua's south-west coast, where west-facing villas have sea views, a beach club sits on the sand and the sun sets behind Montserrat. Jolly Harbour's marina is a few minutes away.
Why Choose Tamarind Hills for a Luxury Villa Holiday?
Sunset sets the rhythm at Tamarind Hills. The resort climbs a hillside above Ffryes Beach on Antigua's south-west coast and faces west, so most villas look across the Caribbean Sea towards Montserrat. It is a compact gated resort rather than a spread of neighbourhoods, which turns the choice into a question of height: villas low on the slope sit by the beach boardwalk, and those higher up have wider views. Jolly Harbour is a few minutes' drive, and the airport is a short transfer away.
What a villa adds here is privacy with a resort behind it. Many have a private infinity pool and a wrap-around deck for dining outdoors, while the beach club, restaurants and activities on Ffryes Beach are shared, so nobody has to drive out for dinner. We would book Tamarind Hills for slow, beach-led weeks: calm-water days, a boat trip from the marina, then evenings on a terrace as the sun drops behind Montserrat. Families and groups get three to five bedrooms with room to spread out, and couples get villas with sea views and quiet terraces.
Our villa guide below sets out which layout suits which party.
Best Time to Visit Tamarind Hills
Temperature units
December to April is the driest and busiest stretch, and the one we would choose for a first visit. September to November brings the most rain, the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season (June to November) and the quietest island. Warmth is rarely the variable: highs typically stay between 28°C and 31°C all year, and the sea is warm enough to swim in every month. What changes is rainfall, wind and how many other people are around, so the right month depends on whether you want regattas and festive weeks or space and calm.
Historical averages for this area over the past 10 years: typical high and low temperatures, total monthly rainfall and peak wind speed. Conditions vary from year to year.
Winter High Season (December-March)
The classic window for a Caribbean break, with highs around 28°C and the lowest humidity of the year. Breezes are steady and rain is usually light. Christmas and New Year are the most in-demand weeks, and the larger oceanfront villas are often booked many months ahead. Ffryes Beach is generally calm and clear, Jolly Harbour Golf Club is a short drive away, and December brings the Antigua Charter Yacht Show to the island's harbours.
Spring (April-May)
Our favourite balance of weather and space. Highs rise towards 30°C, showers stay brief, and crowds thin out after Easter. Late April brings the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, followed by Antigua Sailing Week at English Harbour, so sailing enthusiasts should book well ahead. The hills inland stay fairly green after the winter rains, and mild mornings suit walking.
Summer (June-August)
Hotter and more humid, with highs of 30°C–31°C and nights that seldom cool much. The sea is usually calm and very warm, so paddleboarding and kayaking from the beach are easy and families spend long afternoons in the water. Rain tends to fall in short showers. This is not the island's peak season, apart from Antigua Carnival, which runs from late July into early August. Families on school holidays tend to book the larger four-bedroom villas early.
Wet Season (September-November)
The wettest months, with more than 100mm of rain a month on average, usually in heavy bursts followed by sunshine. This is the peak of hurricane season, so flexible bookings and good travel insurance make sense. The sea is at its warmest and the island at its quietest, although some local businesses take a seasonal break. Independence Day on 1 November brings parades and celebrations. For travellers who accept some weather risk, the resort is at its most peaceful.

Concierge Travel Guide to Tamarind Hills
The drive from V.C. Bird International Airport, on the island's northeast side, takes around 30-40 minutes. Antigua has direct and connecting flights from major North American and European hubs, plus regional links across the Caribbean, and travellers from South America and the Middle East usually connect through Miami, New York or London. A hire car is useful for exploring, and private transfers and taxis are easy to arrange. The resort sits on a ridge above Ffryes Beach, facing west towards Montserrat, with the marina, supermarkets and banks at Jolly Harbour a few minutes away.
Where to Eat
The Tamarind Hills Beach Club on Ffryes Beach covers most evenings. Wild Tamarind serves Caribbean cooking with international influences at lunch and dinner, The Terrace does breakfast and early-evening Mediterranean tapas, and the Hummingbird Bar mixes cocktails until 10pm. Further afield, Sheer Rocks, on the cliffs at nearby Cocobay, is one of the island's most sought-after lunch bookings. Try fungie and pepperpot (the national dish), ducana with saltfish and the sweet Antigua black pineapple, and look for English Harbour rum, distilled on the island. On Sunday evenings, Shirley Heights Lookout holds a barbecue with steel band music above English Harbour.
Beaches
Ffryes Beach lies directly below the villas, a long stretch of pale sand with generally calm water. You can browse villas within walking distance of the beach if you want it on your doorstep. Next door, Darkwood Beach is popular for swimming and has a beach bar, and Valley Church Beach, just to the north, is known for clear, shallow water. Turners Beach and the coast around Crab Hill are quieter to the south. Rendezvous Bay on the south coast can only be reached by boat or a rough track, and Half Moon Bay, on the Atlantic-facing east coast, is worth the drive across the island.
Things to Do
Jolly Harbour Marina is the base for boat charters, fishing trips and catamaran days, whether around the island or out to Cades Reef for snorkelling. A day trip to Barbuda, by ferry or a short flight, takes you to long pink-sand beaches and the frigatebird colony in Codrington Lagoon. Inland, Fig Tree Drive winds through rainforest close to Tamarind Hills, and you can hike Mount Obama, the island's highest point, from the southwest.
Golf
Jolly Harbour Golf Club, an 18-hole layout close to the marina, is the nearest course. Cedar Valley Golf Club near St John's is the island's other 18-hole option. In the warmer months, early morning tee times are usually the most comfortable.
With Children
Family days centre on the sea and the interior. At Stingray City on the east coast, children can wade among southern stingrays, and the Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour has zip lines for older ones. For more ideas with teenagers, see our guide to the best Caribbean destinations for teens.
Culture and History
Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, a Georgian naval dockyard that still works as a marina, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and about 40 minutes away by car. In St John's, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is housed in the 1750 courthouse, the twin towers of St John's Cathedral rise over the town and the public market is busiest on Saturday mornings. Betty's Hope keeps the remains of a sugar plantation. Dates for Sailing Week and Carnival are in Best Time to Visit.
